I’m a backpacker…and my pockets are empty

This post is here: UK & Worldwide

Part of the parcel of being a backpacker is learning to live on a budget.

In this blog I try and give you some top tips on how to save some cash.

Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail

Travelling is about being spontaneous and seeing where the moment takes you. However a little planning can go a long way. Even if it is just setting a date for your flights. Plane tickets vary massively and planning in advance gives you the best opportunity to get the cheapest deals.

Off Peak Travel

This is a must for any thrifty traveller! Why pay two/ three times as much for the same journey? Travelling after 9:30am and before 5pm can save you a small fortune. This just so happens to fit in with most hostels check in and check out times too.

Food

Now I’m not saying don’t eat. I like food, its just yummy. What I would say is just be clever. Most hostels now offer a free breakfast, and the good ones offer free toast/ coffee and tea 24hrs.

Free food is scientifically* proven to taste better as well. Also ask where the local markets are, you can pick up awesome bargains here. The best place to buy fresh meat and veg!!!

* no actual science was used, but I think it does.

Budgeting

The best way to save money is to come up with a weekly budget. Now there is no point coming up with a budget if you’re not going to stick to it, so make sure your budget is realistic. Allow money for a few beers and for some miscellaneous goods. Plus make sure your budget has a contingency fund, (things never go to plan!)

Wanna take budgeting to the next level? Why not set up another bank account (for travelling) and set up a direct debit from your normal bank account to your travelling account. That way you simply can’t spend your entire week’s budget on one crazy night out.

Free Internet Does Exist

Internet can cost up to £5 per hour, which I personally feel is a bit extreme. Keep your eye out for those free WI-FI spots, eg Some hostels, local cafes, McDonalds and some trains. If you don’t have your own laptop/ smartphone, just make sure you use your time wisely, don’t pay and then think “errrrr what did i want to do again?”.

Free Activities

Fun doesn’t have to mean expensive. Although you do sometimes have to spend money on activities, there are plenty of free alternatives. Whether it’s a walk in the botanical gardens or visiting the local museum, there are loads of activities that are massive amounts of fun as well as being FREE. Always ask the staff in your hostel, as they have the local insider knowledge.

Embrace the brilliance of free activities!

We’re not suggesting that you let money rule over your travel experience. But making little savings here and there will really help keep you bank account looking healthy.

My Top Tip would be:

If its a choice between free now or pay later.. then do it now!

Keep an eye out for my regular backpacking blogs via the Hatters Hostel website. I hope they will come in handy for you when travelling around the beautiful UK – Garth.
