3500,000 years ago (or 479988 BC) a little hand axe was dropped. This hand axe, having been discovered in 1892, points towards the earliest indication of human life in what was to become Birmingham.

Quite a lot has happened since then.

DID YOU KNOW :Birmingham is home to Cadbury‘s Chocolate. George and his brother Richard Cadbury moved their successful chocolate manufacturing business from Bull Street, Birmingham to Bournville in 1879.

Birmingham was originally just a small hamlet that sprang up sometime in the 7th century. The leader of the tribe was called Birm, and with the Saxon translation of home being ‘ham’, and tribe being ‘ing’, Birmingham was born!Through the centuries Birmingham has transformed from market town to the fastest growing city of the 19th Century and has often been hailed as the ‘first manufacturing city in the world’, whether it be by canal, train or later by road, Birmingham was the hub of all things made in the UK.

DID YOU KNOW : During the 19th Century, 75% of everything written in the world was with a ‘Birmingham’ pen

Do not just think of B-Ham as a making kind of place. Ask yourself what kind of world would we live in without Birmingham?  You can forgot the talents of; Black Sabbath, Duran Duran, Arthur Conan Doyle, J.R.R Tolkien, Matthew Boulton, Tony Hancock and of coarse the Chicken Balti, all of whom have links this place.

DID YOU KNOW: Birmingham has more canals than Venice, over a 100 miles worth

This is why in late 2008 Hatters decided it was time to come to Brum. The search began with where to be based. There was only one answer, Birmingham’s Historic Jewellery Quarter.  The Jewellery Quarter dates back over 250 years and is still the largest jewellery quarter in europe! It is also the vibrant heart of Birmingham, surrounded by great restaurants, great music and of coarse great pubs. And all this just 5 minutes from the official city center. Next the building. If I said to you that Hatters Birmingham is based in a grade 2 listed former silversmith and goldsmith factory would you be impressed. No? Then I’ll just drop another little fact in, every time you stay at Hatters Birmingham you are staying the the very place where the original FA cup was made!

DID YOU KNOW: Birmingham’s Centenary Square is made up of more than half a million individual bricks – all hand laid!

Our aim was to give our guests more for less. Free breakfast, Free Tea, Free Coffee, Free Bread, Free Wi-Fi, and making all our rooms en-suite was just the start, the real aim was to get our guests getting to know the people they were sharing their rooms with.

DID YOU KNOW: Hatters is named so because its first hostel was originally a hat factory

Whether it be our impromptu free BBQs, our free movies nights, our vain attempts to win the local pub quiz or our now legendary pub crawls, we just want to get to know our guests better. Our philosophy is that any hostel can provide a bed and a microwave, but we are not just any hostel. We (the staff) adore Birmingham, we wouldn’t be here otherwise. Its’ not just us either, the New York Times said Birmingham was the 19th best place to visit in 2012 IN THE WORLD!!! All we want is to share the city we love with you guys!

So you can imagine our joy when earlier this month we found out we had be voted by HostelWorld’s guests to be the top hostel in England for 2011!

We want to thanks every single guest who has stayed with us, every single one of you has brought something to the place and we thank you for it.

Don’t think that we now intend to sit on our laurels,

90% isn’t quite 100% is it. . . .
